Broadly speaking, Rifle Metallic Silhouette (RMS) is a sport in which rifles are used to knock down metal targets at a variety of distances. Matches cater for centrefire, rimfire and air rifles. The sport originated in Mexico in the early 1950s and arrived in Australia in the late 1970s. RMS is a sanctioned discipline of the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA).

Cowboy Lever Action Silhouette Rifle became part of the Rifle Metallic Silhouette discipline in 2006. SSAA’s new Cowboy Lever Action Silhouette Rifle match is similar to the Rifle Metallic Silhouette match, in which rifles are used to knock down metal targets at a variety of distances. Unlike the current Rifle Metallic Silhouette matches, however, the Cowboy Lever Action match can be contested on the 100 and 200m Handgun Metallic Silhouette ranges, thus opening up Rifle Silhouette to a larger number of shooters who don’t have access to the 500m range required for the Centrefire Rifle Silhouette match.

Rimfire Rifle Metallic Silhouette is now shot at our Silverdale Range on the second Saturday of each month as well as the traditional fourth Sunday of the month.  Approved users are able to use the Silhouette targets on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each week – but you must book in advance. To become an approved user you will need to attend the metallic silhouette range on a 4th Sunday and satisfy those coordinating this event that you understand how the equipment works and how this range is run.
